Pride, Self-conceit, Vanity and Boastfulness
The Quranic terms “Mukhtaal” (مُخْتَالٍ) and “Fakhoor” (فَخُورٍ) denote people who show excessive pride, self-conceit, vanity and boastfulness. The term “Fakhoor” for the “Boastful” person comes from the Arabic word “Fakhoor” used for a she-camel having a large udder but little milk inside. Boastful people tend to put up a display of greatness because of things extrinsic to themselves with little goodness inside their personality or character. Such people have been condemned in the Quran.
When We bestow upon the human being a measure of Our grace and then take it away from him, he yields to despair and becomes ungrateful.
And if, after adversity, We let him taste good fortune he says, All my ills are gone. He becomes exultant and boastful.
[Al-Quran 11/9-10]
Do not avert your face from people out of haughtiness and do not walk with pride on the earth: Verily, Allah does not love any of those who, full of self-conceit, act in a boastful manner.
[Al-Quran 31/18]
And serve Allah with all humility and submissiveness, and do not ascribe divinity, in any way, to aught beside Him. And do good unto your parents, and near of kin, and unto orphans, and the needy, and the neighbour from among your own people, and the neighbour who is a stranger, and the friend by your side, and the wayfarer, and those whom you rightfully possess. Verily, Allah does not love any of those who, full of self-conceit, act in a boastful manner;
[Al-Quran 4/36]
Know well that the worldly life is but a diversion and distraction (from the real purpose of life, i.e. tazkiya/self-actualization), and a show of beauty, and exchange of boastful claims between you, and a competition of increase in riches and children. (All this is) like a rain, the growth of which attracts the farmers, then it withers, and you see it turning yellow, then it becomes straw. And in the Hereafter there is a severe punishment (for the disbelievers), and forgiveness from Allah and (Allah‘s) pleasure (for the believers and the righteous). The worldly life is nothing but a material of delusion.
˹So˺ compete with one another for forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His messengers. This is the favour of Allah. He grants it to whoever He wills. And Allah is the Lord of infinite bounty.
No disaster befalls the earth, nor yourselves but according to the Laws that We have already recorded in the Book of Decrees. Verily, all this is easy for Allah.
Thus despair not over whatever has left you, nor exult for whatever you have been given. For, Allah does not love any of those who, full of self-conceit, act in a boastful manner –
[Al-Quran 57/20-23]
