Spending for the Welfare of Humanity (Infaaq)
Human beings have generally turned out to be miserly
Say, “If you were in control of the treasures of my Sustainer’s Beneficence, you would certainly hold them back for fear of spending/exhaustion (of these treasures); As human being has turned out to be miserly”.
[Al-Quran 17/100]
Allah has commanded the Believers to spend their resources in His way
And spend in the way of Allah; and do not cast yourselves into destruction with your own hands; and do good work. Verily, Allah loves the good-doers.
[Al-Quran 2/195]
Spending in the way of Allah is in fact spending for the welfare of humanity
They ask you, what they should spend. Say, “Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for (1) parents and (2) al-aqrabeen (i.e. family and relatives), (3) al-yataama (i.e. orphans, widows, and those who are left alone and helpless), (4) al-masaakeen (i.e. those whose hard earned income is insufficient to meet their basic needs, those whose businesses have stalled, and those who have lost their jobs), also (5) the ibn-e-sabeel (i.e. the needy wayfarer, the homeless son of the street, and the one who has come to your town in a destitute condition). And whatever you do of good – indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of it.”
[Al-Quran 2/215]
(Charity is also) for those in need, who, in Allah’s cause are restricted (from travel), and cannot move about in the land, seeking (trade or work): the ignorant man thinks, because of their modesty, that they are free from want. You shall know them by their (characteristic) appearance: They beg not importunately from all the sundry. And whatever of good you give, be assured Allah knows it well.
[Al-Quran 2/273]
Allah is Free of All Wants
O Mankind! It is you who stand in need of Allah. And Allah! He is free of all wants and worthy of all praise.
[Al-Quran 35/15]
Whatever is in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah
Whatever is in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. Verily Allah! He is free of all wants, worthy of all praise.
[Al-Quran 31/26]
And what is the matter with you that you do not spend in the way of Allah, whereas the heritage of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah alone. (you are merely the trustees).
[Al-Quran 57/10]
Allah has made us the trustees of whatever we have
Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and spend out of that of which He has made you trustees: for, those of you who believe and who spend shall have a great reward.
[Al-Quran 57/7]
The Surplus should be open for spending, instead of hoarding.
And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “the surplus beyond your needs”
[Al-Quran 2/219]
O Believers! Verily, many religious scholars and monks wrongfully appropriate peoples possessions and turn people away from God’s path! Tell those who hoard gold and silver instead of giving in God’s cause that they will have a painful punishment:
[Al-Quran 9/34]
There has to be a balance between extravagance and miserliness
Those who, when they spend, are not extravagant and not niggardly, but hold a just (balance) between those (extremes);
[Al-Quran 25/67]
Those who spend in the way of Allah will be rewarded 700 times
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
[Al-Quran 2/261]
Charity should not be followed by reminders of generosity or hurting the recipients’ feelings
Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of generosity] or hurting [the feelings of the one who is given charity] will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
[Al-Quran 2/262]
Kind speech and act of forgiveness are better than (such) charity (which is) followed by hurting (the feelings of the one who is given charity). And Allah is Free of any need and Forbearing.
[Al-Quran 2/263]
O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or hurting (the feelings of the one who is given charity) as does one who spends his wealth [only] to show-off to the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allah does not guide those who deny the truth.
[Al-Quran 2/264]
Charity is to be done for seeking Allah’s Pleasure and one’s spiritual strength
And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah’s pleasure and their spiritual strength is like a garden on high ground which is hit by a downpour – so it yields its fruits in double. And [even] if it is not hit by a downpour, then a drizzle [is sufficient]. And Allah is All-Seeing of whatever you do.
[Al-Quran 2/265]
Would one of you like to have a garden of palm trees and grapevines underneath which rivers flow in which he has from every fruit? But he is afflicted with old age and has weak offspring, and it is hit by a whirlwind containing fire and is burned. Thus does Allah make clear to you [His] verses that you might give thought.
[Al-Quran 2/266]
Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills. And whatever good you [believers] spend is for your own benefit, provided you spend seeking Allah’s pleasure. And whatever good you spend, (its reward) will be paid back to you in full and you shall not be treated unjustly.
[Al-Quran 2/272]
Charity should be done out of good things, not out of defective stuff
O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
[Al-Quran 2/267]
Generosity par excellence is to do charity out of things you dearly cherish
You can never attain generosity par excellence unless you spend (for the welfare of humanity) that which you dearly cherish; and whatever you spend surely it is known to Allah.
[Al-Quran 3/92]
Charity will never make you poor
The Satan (i.e. the embodiment of all evil inclinations) threatens you of poverty (if you do charity) and prompts you to niggardliness, while Allah guarantees you protection (against poverty) from Him and bounty/abundance. And Allah is all-Encompassing and All-Knowing.
[Al-Quran 2/268]
And whatever you spend of expenditures or whatever pledge you make – indeed, Allah knows of it. And for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.
[Al-Quran 2/270]
And whatever you spend (in the way of Allah) so it is He Who will compensate it; He is the Best of Providers.
[Al-Quran 34/39]
And whatever you spend In the way of Allah, (its reward) will be paid back to you in full and you shall not be treated unjustly.
[Al-Quran 8/60]
Charity can be done both in open or in secret
If you disclose your charitable expenditures, that’s are all right; but if you keep them secret and give them to the poor, it is even better for you, and that will remove imprints of some of your misdeeds from you [thereby]. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Aware.
[Al-Quran 2/271]
Those, who spend their wealth (in the way of Allah) during the night and the day, secretly as well as openly, shall have their reward with their Lord. They shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve!
[Al-Quran 2/274]
Those who are steadfast in seeking the favour of their Lord, and pray regularly and spend secretly and openly out of what We have provided them with, and ward off evil with good. Theirs shall be the final abode.
[Al-Quran 13/22]
Allah sets forth the example (of) a slave (who is) owned, not he has power on anything and (one) whom We provided him from a provision good, so he spends from it, secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? All praise (is) for Allah! Nay, but most of them (do) not know.
[Al-Quran 16/75]
Good people do Charity both in prosperity and in adversity
those who spend (for the welfare of humanity), both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and are forgiving towards their fellow men; And Allah loves those who do good works.
[Al-Quran 3/134]
Charity is to be done in accordance with one’s means
[In all these respects,] let him who has ample means spend in accordance with his amplitude; and let him whose means of subsistence are scanty spend in accordance with what God has given him: God does not burden any human being with more than He has given him – [and it may well be that] God will grant, after hardship, ease.
[Al-Quran 65/7]
Charity is in one’s own benefit/spiritual development
Remain, then, conscious of God as best you can, and listen [to Him], and pay heed. And spend in charity for the good of your own selves: for, such as from their own covetousness are saved – it is they, they that shall attain to a happy state!
[Al-Quran 64/16]
Allah will never waste the reward of the doers of good
And whenever they spend anything [for the sake of God], be it little or much, and whenever they move on earth [in God’s cause] -it is recorded in their favour, and God will grant them the best reward for all that they have been doing.
[Al-Quran 9/121]
Charity is a commerce that will never suffer any loss
Those who rehearse the Book of Allah, establish regular Prayer, and spend (in Charity) out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for a commerce that will never suffer loss
[Al-Quran 35/29]
Let’s do some charity before it is too late
And spend out of what We have provided you with before death comes to one of you and he says, My Lord! If only You would grant me respite for a little while, then I would give alms and be among the righteous.
[Al-Quran 63/10]
Speak to my servants who have believed, that they may establish regular prayers, and spend (in charity) out of the sustenance we have given them, secretly and openly, before the coming of a Day in which there will be neither mutual bargaining nor befriending.
[Al-Quran 14/31]
Behold! You are those who are called upon to spend for God’s cause, but among you are those who are niggardly, and whoever stints does so against his own self. Indeed, God is self-sufficient, but you stand in need [of Him], and if you turn back, He will bring in your place another people, who will not be like you.
[Al-Quran 47/38]
